BIO
Hawkins Biggins is a visual storyteller who grew up on ‘Oahu and discovered her love of photography in high school. She went on to study at New England School of Photography in Boston — then followed her heart back home in 2008 to build a life behind the lens. In the years since, she has woven together a career as a commercial photographer, fine artist, and teacher.
For more than a decade, Hawkins has made it her mission to help others see the world more creatively — through workshops, photowalks, and community classes across Honolulu. Highlights include ten summers teaching young artists at her alma mater, Mid-Pacific Institute, and an ongoing photography courses for adult learners at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
When she is not immersed in photography, you’ll likely find Hawkins playing board games with her teenage son, on photowalks with her iPhone camera, savoring a good book, planning her next travel adventure, or hitting the trails—muddy boots and all—to connect with nature.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Hawkins is drawn to photographing both nature and the urban environment, seeing in them a reflection of modern life’s dichotomy—the tension between isolation and intimacy. Her work seeks moments of connection and subtle order within the often chaotic landscapes we inhabit.
In her recent digital art explorations, she uses layering techniques to combine multiple perspectives from a single experience, creating images that move beyond the limits of a single frame. By blending elements drawn from nature and architecture, her composite works distill the physical world into its essential elements of color, shape, texture, and form. The result is a layered sense of place, where textures and images merge to evoke the mood and atmosphere of an environment.
